JPC majors with questions concerning graduation or course requirements should contact either the relevant instructor or the division director, Prof. Jae-won Lee.   Also, if you know other students who believe they?re JPC majors but haven?t received InfoLine , urge them to check with the school office to be sure they?ve actually declared a major in journalism and promotional communication.   

 

JPC Division Curriculum Alert:

 

The Science Writing certificate program, a new program being prepared in collaboration with the College of Science, has been approved by the faculty of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.  Our division is initiating this certificate program in recognition of the growing need of specialty writers and reporters in today's world.  Today's news media definitely need competent journalists to deal with a host of such complex issues as evolution vs. intelligent design, stem-cell research, AIDS, public health, global warming, just to name a few.  This program has yet to be approved by the University Curriculum Committee and the university's Faculty Senate.  We expect the program be implemented beginning this fall.

 

School Activities:

 

Dick Feagler, popular columnist at The Plain Dealer, will give a public lecture on our campus Monday, April 3, at 1:45 p.m. in the Drinko Hall of the Music and Communication Center building.  His topic--"News is what I say it is"?should interest students in the Journalism & Promotional Communication Division, so mark your calendar now.  Feagler will give us his perspective on the nature and evolution of news based on some 40-plus years of journalism experience.

Professional Events in the Community:

 

Denny Lynch, senior vice president of communications for Wendy's International, will talk about crisis communication Tuesday, March 21, at the Windows on the River in the Powerhouse in the Flats, with 11:30 a.m. registration and networking and a 12 noon lunch and program.   Click on the attachment for more information.

 

Some Opportunities :

 

Gather.com has launched a national scholastic journalism competition.   Two talented journalism students, one graduate and one undergraduate, will each win a $1,000 scholarship, and the top 10 finalists will have the chance to intern at The Huffington Post in either New York or Los Angeles.   Click on the attachment for more information.

Advertising in the News:

 

Advertising became news last week when Colonel Sanders? Kentucky Fried Chicken unveiled a new TV ad that allows viewers to crack a hidden message if they play the spot back slowly on a digital video recorder or VCR.   Click on the attachment for the story.

 

Danish Cartoon Coverage

The Society of Professional Journalists is troubled by the insensitivity of Danish cartoons that depict the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The Society also denounces the violence that has ensued as a result of protests against the cartoons' publication. For a recent release by the society on the topic, see the attachment.

Student Press Threatened

The U.S. Supreme Court missed an important opportunity to affirm the rights of student journalists as it decided Tuesday not to hear a case involving student press rights, Society of Professional Journalists President David Carlson said.   ?It is a gloomy day for the First Amendment,? Carlson said, ?and a sad day for the rights of student journalists.?   See the attachment for more of the story.
