Professional Experience & Community Activities

Jae-won Lee, has been an integral part of Cleveland State during his 32 years as a communication professor. He teaches journalism in the School of Communication and is the Director of the Journalism and Promotional Communication division. He believes the new division “is a new beginning of an elevated and expanded concept in curriculum.” During the past ten years, he has also been the Director of Curricular Affairs in the Office of Academic Affairs

Born in Jinju, South Korea, Lee began his career as a reporter for The Korea Times in 1963. He came to the United States in 1967. Dr. Lee is currently an advisor for the Society for Professional Journalists, a member of the International Association for Media and Communication Research a member of the International Communication Association, and a member of the University Academic Council.

From 1995-2000, Dr. Lee was the Executive Director & International Coordinator for the Olympic Media Awards. He was the president of the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the Fulbright Association in 1996-1998, and from1982-1983, Dr. Lee was also President of the International Communication Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
Dr. Lee has recently been working on “Olympics and the Media,” a paper researching effects that the media has on the Olympics. In 2004, he produced a DVD formatted e-book, titled Olympic Journalism at Its Best, that featured Olympic Media Competition in the 1996 and 1998 Olympics. Other published works include: Elite Media amidst Mass Culture: A Critical Look at Mass Communication in Korea, Modernization vs. Revolution: Cultural Change in Korea and China, and Seoul Olympics and the Global Community.

Education

Lee received his Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Iowa, his M.A. in Journalism from Marquette University, and both an M.A. and B.A. in English from Seoul National University.

Dr. Lee is married with two adult children that both live in NYC and also in his spare time he really enjoys gardening.
