Professional Experience & Community Activities

Gary Pettey teaches public relations, mass communication, methods and statistics in the School of Communication. First, joining CSU in 1985, he attended university in his hometown of Madison, Wisconsin. He earned a BA in English and History; a JBA (Journalism), an MA in Journalism and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication. At the UW, he was a news-editorial sequence and research methods instructor and a research assistant.

While teaching at CSU, Pettey also worked as a consultant, providing expertise to organizations such as Wyse Advertising and the Cleveland Cavaliers. After 13 years of service, Dr. Pettey left in 1998 to take a consulting position, where, among others, he worked with the U.S. Postal Services in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Pettey returned to CSU in 2004. Currently, he is working on a research projects including screen size, sound and Presence; peripheral persuasion effects of network television and a content analysis of profanity on primetime cable programming. He is also working on a grant serving the health needs of the Latino community in the Cleveland area.

In addition to his professional involvements, Dr. Pettey has continually demonstrated his commitment to his students' learning experience. In 2005, he became an advisor to the newly formed Public Relations Society Student Association (PRSSA), where he assists students in gaining experience in and knowledge of various careers in the field of public relations, marketing and advertising.

Dr. Pettey was nominated in the 2005 edition of "Who's Who in Teaching" and has been published in professional journals including: Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Communication Research, and Public Health Reports.

Dr. Pettey is a member of the Public Relations Society of America, the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication and the International Communication Association.
When he's not teaching, he enjoys biking, reading and his newfoundlander, Anthony.
