Director's Letter

January, 2006

Dear Communication Students,

Welcome to Cleveland State's School of Communication. We are dedicated to providing you with a first-rate education, offering engaging classes that stimulate your mind, and teaching you skills needed to build your career.

Communication is all around us, you can't escape it. Ads on cell phones, blogs, entertainment television, the dazzling array of conversations in everyday life between doctors and patients, supervisors and employees, and acquaintances and close friends - this is all communication. Communication has reshaped politics and transformed business. It has the potential to improve relations among people from different ethnic and religious groups. Coursework in the school will illuminate your understanding of these issues and introduce you to the social scientific study of communication.

We offer four undergraduate majors: Communication Management, Film and Digital Media, Journalism and Promotional Communication, and a general major in Communication. Communication Management focuses on relational, organizational, health, and intercultural communication, and mediation. Film and Digital Media offers sequences in media studies, film, and digital media. Journalism and Promotional Communication offers tracks in journalism, public relations, and advertising. The Communication major offers general coursework and career-related training. Dr. Eileen Berlin Ray is Director of Communication Management, Dr. Jae-won Lee is Director of Journalism and Promotional Communication, and Professor Michael Rand is Director of Media Arts and Technology, the division that houses the film and digital media major. Our graduate program, ranked among the top in the country, offers students training in communication theory, multiple research methodologies, and strategies to apply communication to everyday problems. Dr. Jill Rudd serves as Graduate Director.

The School houses several professional facilities. The Communication Research Center, directed by Dr. Kimberly Neuendorf, has conducted quantitative surveys, focus groups and other projects for a host of Northeast Ohio companies, including RTA, NASA-Glenn Research Center, and a major Cleveland law firm. The Digital Video Communication Center, with its sound-proofed studio and nonlinear editing facilities, has produced the Urban Issues cable television program for over a decade. The university's laboratory newspaper, The Cleveland Stater, is housed in the Communication School. We have several student organizations, including the Student Association for Professional Communication, the Cleveland State Advertising Association, the CSU student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, a student chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, Second Shift, a film production organization, and the Communication Graduate Student Association.

The school has a thriving internship program that offers students career-related opportunities in all major areas of communication, including health (with internships at Fairview and University Hospitals), the arts (with an internship at the Cleveland museum of Art), mass media (students have interned at The News Herald and the major TV stations), and promotional communication (with internships at some of the largest local PR and advertising firms). Internships can enhance students' academic training and help them get jobs in the communication field. Our internship director is Professor Eleanor Dombrowski. Our graduates have landed jobs as communication specialists in numerous organizations, with some having worked in prestigious positions in television news, advertising, health care management, and film.

This is a premier communication program in Ohio. The School of Communication has a nationally-known faculty of scholars, whose overall research productivity was recently ranked eighth in the U.S. Our professors have diverse research and professional interests. What unites them is their desire to teach and share knowledge with new generations of students. The Communication School is a hub of activity. We invite you to join us and explore the dynamic, ever-changing area of human communication.
