Cheryl Bracken began teaching at Cleveland State University since 2000, and focuses her research on exploring the psychological processing of media content. She is intrigued with the strong impact that television and other forms of media have on people’s lives.

Dr. Bracken’s work includes: “Presence and Image Quality: The Case of High Definition Television” in Media Psychology; “Social Presence and Children: Praise, Intrinsic Motivation, and Learning with Computers” in Journal of Communication; “How Cosmopolites React to Messages: America Under Attack” in Communication Research Reports; ”How Screen Size Affects Perception: A Survey of Presence Evoking Technology in our Living Room” in Visual Communication Quarterly; and in 2003, she co-edited an issue of the journal Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments.  She holds the firm belief that the screen size of a television has a significant impact on the viewer’s perception and changes their experience.

Dr. Bracken is a member of the International Society for Presence Research, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and the Broadcast Education Association. She was recently elected secretary of the information systems division of the ICA by international vote. In 2001, she received the New Faulty Research Award.

Education

Dr. Bracken holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from Temple University in Philadelphia and her B.A. in Broadcasting from the State University of New York, Buffalo. She is originally from Buffalo, New York.

Dr. Bracken keeps busy with her four children, and tries to find time for mystery novels.
