Careers & Internships

Congratulations on starting your career path! Be sure to follow the Career Development Checklist for COM Majors to stay on track.

CSU Career Services Center is your headquarters for career development information. Career Services offers workshops and courses to help you create your resume, learn about employment opportunities, practice interviewing skills, and much more! You can take the career courses for academic credit; CSC 121 - Career Orientation, CSC 224 - Career Exploration and CSC 321 - Employment Strategies.

Anita Young is the Career Services Coordinator for School of Communication students. She can be reached at a.rufyoung@csuohio.edu or 216.687.5534.

You can search for internships and jobs, post your resume and apply for positions online at CSUcareerline. When you register for CSUcareerline, be sure to activate the "Job Agent" feature. The Job Agent will automatically send you an email alert whenever a new internship or job is posted matching your career interests. To open your free CSUcareerline account simply follow the on-line prompts or click here for CSUcareerline instructions.

What can you do with a degree in Communication? Check out our Alumni Hall of Fame!

To build your resume and start networking, you should also consider becoming active in career-related student associations and professional organizations.

Internships:

Internships are a great way to build your resume as you learn from professionals in a professional environment. Today, employers expect college graduates to have completed at least one internship. You may be competing for jobs with candidates who have completed two or three internships. And, you will enjoy your time learning. Click here for examples of internships.

In the School of Communication, you can earn academic credit for your internship experience. COM 490 - Communication Internship is available to students who have completed 300-level courses relevant to the internship. Complete rules and regulations can be found here: COM 490 Communication Internship Guidelines. You can also register your internship with Career Services CSC 300 or CSC 400. For more information, read Options for Communication Internships for Academic Credit.

Getting an internship is similar to getting a job. You will need to search for internship openings using services such as CSUcareerline or by viewing the on-line School of Communication Employer Directories. You will also need to apply for the internship by submitting a resume and cover letter. If you successfully interview and are offered the internship, you and your employer will need to complete the COM 490 Internship Agreement.

Your internship search should begin at least one semester prior to enrolling in COM 490. All internships for academic credit must be approved by the School of Communication Internship Director. Contact Dr. Gary Pettey, Internship Director, for an appointment. He can be reached at g.pettey@csuohio.edu. Office: MU217
