Fifth Annual Partnership Conference
February 29, 2008
Bert L. and Iris S. Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University
The goal of the Partnership Conference is to bring individuals together who represent K-16 education, professional practice, and history/social science agencies in order to address issues important to our region of Ohio. In particular, our focus will be on ways in which university-community collaborations may foster a more democratically and globally literate citizentry. We expect that the conference will not only sustain existing collaborations, but will also foster new relationships that may have positive impacts on our community.
In 2008, the Conference will be held at the Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University on Friday, February 29th. The conference will examine a range of critically important themes of Global Democracy. Speakers will include some of the nation’s leading thinkers in the field of education, as well as 10 workshop presentations by researchers and practitioners.
At previous Partnership Conferences, attendance was approximately 350 people. The attendee profile for these individuals was inclusive of university students and faculty, K-12 practicing teachers, Cleveland State University alumni, parents, community leaders, and representatives of non-profit and business organizations. We anticipate an equally enthusiastic response to this year’s program.
The morning keynote speaker will be Dr. James Loewen. He is a consultant for the U.S. Department of Justice, winner of the first annual Oliver Cromwell Cox Award for distinguished anti-racist scholarship, and author of Lies My Teacher Told Me, Lies Across America and Sundown Towns. He is currently a professor at the University of Vermont.
John Bul Dau is the keynote speaker for the conference luncheon. He is one of the featured men in Christopher Quinn’s documentary, God Grew Tired of Us. Born in war-torn Sudan, Dau is one of 27,000 Lost Boys forced to flee their villages when the northern government began attacking the south. He is currently studying public policy at Syracuse University, and is a part of many efforts to save Darfur and Sudan from conflict.
There will be 10 workshops during the morning sessions. Sessions will focus on history, religion, conflict resolution, world affairs, cultural studies, and other pertinent topics. Participants will also be able to browse numerous poster sessions throughout the conference.
We look forward to your participation at the fifth annual Cleveland State University Partnership Conference.
