Canada study offered

Cleveland State students will have the opportunity to embark on a course that offers a week-long trip to Toronto, Canada, in summer.
The course, which is titled Urban Studies 472: Canada Studies, is designed for students interested in local government and the global context of public administration. It provides an overview of the political, legal and administrative government in Canada.
Serious study
“This course is for serious students interested in local government, a lot people believe that it’s for graduate students only but it’s open to undergraduates and law students as well,” said Vera Vogelsang-Coombs, Ph.D, associate professor and director of the masters program of public administration at the Maxine Levine College of Urban Affairs.
Vogelsang-Coombs collaborated with professor Larry Bakken of Hamline University Law School in St. Paul, Minn.
“Students at HU will also be involved in similar courses,” said Vogelsang-Coombs. “They will interact with CSU students on-line and in co-residencies.”
Students who enroll in this course will receive credit for electives in undergraduate majors of urban studies, urban services administration and public safety management. This is a standard course where coursework and reading materials will be assigned.
Continuing excellence
“This course examines issues and allows students to compare and contrast the government here and in Canada,” said Vogelsang-Coombs.
“Levin College is ranked number two in the country for specialization in city management. This course allows us to continue on that number two ranking.”
Along with a trip to Toronto, students will have three pre-trip sessions and interact via Internet with officials from Toronto.
Money matters
Students who enroll in the course are expected to pay $620 for lodging and breakfast in downtown Toronto. They are also expected to budget an extra $55 per day for lunch, dinner , local transportation and other expenses. Students will have to make their own arrangements for transportation to and from Toronto.
Hannah Fisher, CSU’s study abroad specialist, will handle all of the room and board arrangements. “We take care of all the billing and the travel aspect of this program,” Fisher said. “This is the first time that CSU has offered a program like this in the urban studies department, so we’re really excited about it.”
