Ubu Roi

November 5-15, 2015
The Helen Rosenfeld Lewis Bialosky Lab Theatre
Directed by Dr. Michael Mauldin
Written by Alfred Jarry
One of the most excessive political caricatures, Ubu Roi ranks with the most original and powerful burlesques of all time. The play, which takes place in Poland or nowhere, deals with the cruelty of despots and the stupidity of the human condition. “Ubu Roi is an iconic, irreverent play which caused riots when it was first produced. This Surrealist romp takes on the excesses of power, war, and corruption in a mind-bending display of theatrical shenanigans,” says Mauldin.

Due to language and content, this production is for mature audiences only.

The Helen Rosenfeld Lewis Bialosky Lab Theatre

The Mother has lost all of her family in feuds with the Felix family, except for her youngest son, the Bridegroom. She arranges his wedding to The Bride, who is loved by young, already-married Leonardo Felix. Leonardo and The Bride run away, to be guided by The Beggar Woman (Death) and The Moon (A Young Woodcutter) toward their inevitable fate.
