Butler A. Jones Series
“Living the American Dilemma”
October 1, 2009 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Open to the Public
Come join us for a panel discussion on the case of Wiley College, a historically black college in Texas, and its 1935 debate team that defeated the national champion team from USC. This history was popularized in the theatrical releases "The Great Debaters," starring Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker and a less-known documentary film "The Real Great Debaters of Wiley College." There will be clips of documentaries and then presentations from these three panelists:
Mareyjoyce Green, is a graduate of Wiley College and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, and founder and former Director of the Women's Comprehensive Program here at Cleveland State University.
Njeri Nuru-Holm, is the Vice President for Institutional Diversity.
Louis Brownlowe, is the former Dean of University Studies at Cleveland State University.
Sponsored by the Department of Sociology and Criminology.
