Welcome to the Office of the Dean

Andrew E. Kersten is the inaugural dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, which was created on July 1, 2022. The college delivers on Cleveland State University’s strategic goals while implementing our mission of inspiring curiosity and accelerating our students to careers. We endeavor to enable all students straightforward access to the college’s degrees and programs; to provide cutting-edge, inclusive learning and research environments; to ensure equitable student services to foster degree completion; and to establish the college as a regional leader in workforce integration so that every graduate from the college has a clear pathway to careers that transform lives and strengthen communities.

Dean Kersten is a historian of Twentieth Century United States History. His research and writings have centered on the intersection of social movements and American politics. His books include a biography of Clarence Darrow, a biography of A. Philip Randolph, and a study of race relations and work during the Second World War.
