Seydou Keïta (1993-2001) pioneered new styles of artistic and cultural representation in West Africa as he created photographs that reflected the emergent cosmopolitanism of those who posed for him in 1950s Bamako, Mali. This panel discussion featuring Dr. Gilbert Doho (Case Western Reserve University), Dr. Barbara Hoffman (Cleveland State University), and Dr. Isolde Brielmaier (Vassar College) examines Keïta's work from three distinctly different scholarly viewpoints. From using Keïta's evocative portraits to understand the political, cultural, and social climate of a mid-twentieth century French colony transitioning into a bustling urban center to deconstructing the response of contemporary viewers to Keïta’s work, this panel promises to stimulate new ideas about the art on view.
