Music Department

Welcome from the Chair

Thank you for your interest in Cleveland State University!

The Department of Music provides a comprehensive education in music at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and at the same time serves as a presenter of concerts, recitals, seminars, master classes and workshops for the campus community and the region. We are located in one of most active cultural centers in the United States. Our building, located on CSU’s main campus in downtown Cleveland is near Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra, and Playhouse Square, one of the largest complexes of performance spaces in the United States. Our own state of the art building includes two concert halls, a recording studio, two digital composition studios, a Composers’ Resource Center, practice rooms, classrooms and studios.

Our students have the opportunity to study with artist performer members of The Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, and other professional ensembles. Our faculty are internationally recognized scholars, composers, and performers who remain active in their fields and who eagerly share their expertise and talents with our students. Students can join a number of our ensembles—two orchestras, two wind ensembles, large and small jazz ensembles, two choruses and other chamber ensembles.

Our Center for Arts and Innovation is a recognized leader in working with teachers to integrate the arts into various curricula. It also sponsors a number of concerts and interdisciplinary symposia among various departments and colleges at Cleveland State.

The Cleveland Contemporary Players, in residence at CSU, is one aspect of our commitment to the creation and performance of new music.

Whether your interests are in performance, composition, music education or music therapy, we can provide those opportunities and experiences to help you reach your goals. I look forward each year to the hundreds of events that occur within the Department of Music and to witness first hand the extraordinary musical and intellectual growth of our students. I hope you will consider joining us in our mission to learn and to make music.
