CSU offers a Bachelor’s of Music in Music Therapy in cooperation with the Cleveland Music Therapy Consortium (CMTC), which is accredited by the American Music Therapy Association. The Consortium, which currently includes Baldwin Wallace University, the College of Wooster, and Cleveland State University, was established in 1976 through a generous grant from the Cleveland Foundation and support from the Cleveland Music School Settlement. It was the first music therapy program offered in Northeast Ohio and the first in the nation to involve a cooperative agreement among educational institutions. Music therapy courses offered through CMTC have traditionally been offered at the Baldwin Wallace campus. However, due to the tremendous growth in music therapy enrollment at CSU over the last several years, CSU created a full-time music therapy position in 2012 to establish an on-campus teaching presence. All music therapy students entering Fall 2012 or after will complete their music therapy coursework on the CSU campus.
Music therapy students learn both the art and science of music therapy. The undergraduate curriculum at Cleveland State University includes both a thorough study of music (the art) as well as coursework in psychology, human anatomy, social and behavioral sciences, disabilities, and general studies (the science). Students also gain practical application of these learned procedures through required fieldwork placements in the community. After completing the rigorous undergraduate coursework and field experiences, music therapy students must complete a six-month, full-time internship and then pass the Certification Board for Music Therapist (CBMT) national exam, which is required to become a board-certified music therapist.
