Yasuhito Sugiyama. In January 2006, Mr. Sugiyama began his tenure as principal tuba with The Cleveland Orchestra. Prior to joining The Cleveland Orchestra, Mr. Sugiyama was a member of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) from 2003 until 2005. From 1997 and 2003, he served as tuba player of the New Japan Philharmonic under Seiji Ozawa's direction. In addition, Mr. Sugiyama has performed in the Saito-Kinen Orchestra, also under Mr. Ozawa. A native of Hyogo, Japan, Mr. Sugiyama is a graduate of Soai University in Osaka, where he studied with Shuzo Karakawa of the Osaka Philharmonic. He also studied with Rex Martin at Northwestern University and with Robert Tucci of the Bavarian State Opera and the Munich Philharmonic. Mr. Sugiyama has appeared as a soloist, recitalist, and clinician and among his solo engagements; he has performed the Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto with the New Japan Philharmonic.
