Rebecca Schweigert Mahew, Oboe.  The Cleveland Plain Dealer has described her playing as “stellar” “excellent” and “touching”. She is one of the founding musicians of CityMusic Cleveland and its Director of Education and is currently principal oboe of the Blossom Festival Orchestra.  She has previously held principal positions in the New World Symphony, where she toured and recorded under the direction of music director Michael Tilson Thomas, and the Hartford Symphony. Summer festivals have included, most notably, two years at Tanglewood, where she was principal oboe for the historic fiftieth anniversary production of Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes under the baton of maestro Seiji Ozawa, and concerto soloist during the noted contemporary music festival; and the Kent-Blossom Music Festival, where she studied with legendary Cleveland Orchestra principal oboist John Mack.  Locally she has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra and Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as all of the regional orchestras. A native of northern Michigan, she received her schooling at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music (BM), as a student of the great James Caldwell, and at Rice University (MM), as a student of Houston Symphony principal oboist Robert Atherholt. A National Merit Scholar, she also earned an English degree (BA with honors) while at Oberlin as a double-degree student.  Ms. Schweigert is on the faculty of Cleveland State University where she serves as principal oboe of the Cleveland Chamber Winds, an ensemble in residence dedicated to the performance of rarely heard wind chamber music. Locally she has She lives in Shaker Heights with her husband, Cleveland Orchestra Associate Principal Horn Michael Mayhew, and their two young children.
