Dr. Heather A. Russell, PhD.

Dr. Russell earned her B.S. in Music Education from Hartwick College, her M.Ed. in Multicultural/Elementary Education from Eastern University, and her Ph.D. in Music Education from Temple University.  She is certified in Orff-Schulwerk (Level 1) from West Chester University, and in Music Learning Theory (Elementary) from the Gordon Institute for Music Learning. She is endorsed by the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation as a teacher trainer in Education Through Movement, a teaching approach developed by Phyllis Weikart.

Prior to joining the faculty at CSU, Dr. Russell was the Coordinator of Music Education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She was also an adjunct faculty member at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and Mansfield University. She taught general, choral, and instrumental music in New York State and Pennsylvania public and private schools for 17 years, primarily at the pre-Kindergarten through middle school levels. She also taught early childhood music at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and at Temple University.

Dr. Russell’s research interests include teacher education, the professional development of preservice and in-service music teachers, reflective practice, movement and music, and issues of equity and social justice in music education. She has presented research at conferences of the American Educational Research Association, the Pennsylvania Music Educators’ Association, the National Association for Music Education, and the Society for Music Teacher Education, and has co-authored a forthcoming article in the International Journal of Music Education.
