Liza Grossman

Liza Grossman is founding Music Director of the Contemporary Youth Orchestra (est. 1995). She has served on the conducting faculty at Interlochen Center for the Arts since 1999 and is the co-founder of the Interlochen Arts Camp Junior Advanced String Institute. She was interim Director of Orchestras at Kent State University 2011-2013.

Grossman has conducted 15 world premiere concertos with members of The Cleveland Orchestra, national and local musicians. She has conducted over 100 orchestral world premieres, all with the composers present. She has collaborated with composers including Bernard Rands, Robert Ward, Joan Tower, Mike Garson, Ryan Gallagher, Mark Mothersbaugh and John Kennedy.

She has conducted world premiere orchestral rock performances with rock and popular artists Graham Nash (CSNY), Ray Manzarek (DOORS), Pat Benatar, Mike Garson, GrandMixer DXT, Donnie Iris, STYX, Jon Anderson (YES), Jefferson Starship and Bootsy Collins.

She holds degrees in music performance and music education from Cleveland State University. Her graduate studies were continued at the University of Michigan. Grossman’s conducting teachers include David Holland, Alexander Schneider, Marvin Rabin and Gerard Schwarz. STRAD magazine calls her "a master of tutelage..."

As a violist, Grossman has performed, recorded and toured with artists including Bernadette Peters, Kansas, Gerald LeVert, The Three Tenors and YES.

She is a guest conductor and clinician for orchestras and festivals around the country, the touring conductor for the rock group Styx, has guest-conducted orchestras including Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, recording orchestras and new music ensembles.
She is also a private violin and viola instructor.

She is the co-executive producer for the AXSTV taping and broadcast of One With Everything, Styx and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, State of Independence, Jon Anderson and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, Jefferson Starship and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, ‘An evening with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra’, the PBS taping of Pass the Buddha, Blame Sally and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra and Psychotic Bump School, Bootsy Collins and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra,

Grossman and CYO can be heard on New Door Records CD, DVD and Blu-Ray ‘One With Everything; Styx and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra’, IV: Four World Premiere Concertos (iTunes), seen on PBS, Palladia, AXSTV, VH-1 and VH-1 Classic internationally with Styx, Jon Anderson (Yes), Blame Sally and Jefferson Starship.
Grossman and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra are the recipients of awards including
The ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming (2008 - 2013), the Northern Ohio Live Award of Achievement and the Sunshine Award from Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio for outstanding music education.
