Sundown Jazz Series
Kip Reed Trio
with Matt Perko and Dan Wilson

Because of the supporting roles they play within a jazz group bass players all too often fail to receive the credit they deserve for the success of those groups. In order to focus more attention on those individuals this year’s Sundown Jazz Concerts will feature trios led by some of this area’s finest bassists.

The season’s first concert, featuring the Kip Reed Trio, will take place at 4:00 on Sunday, September 14, in Cleveland State University’s Drinko Recital Hall, located in the Music Communication Building at 2001 Euclid Ave.

An east coast native currently splitting his time between New York City and Cleveland, electric bassist Kip Reed has played with many major artists spanning several genres.  His love of Brazilian, African and other world-beat music combined with his background in rock, funk, and jazz make him one of the most in-demand bass players on the east and north coasts.

In his nearly 30-year career, he has recorded or performed with Brazilian superstars Bebel Gilberto, Ivan Lins and Tania Maria, jazz legends Brother Jack Mcduff, Larry Coryell and Joe Lovano and disco divas Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor.  He has been featured on recordings alongside bass greats Anthony Jackson and Freddie Washington and can be heard on Chuck Mangione's Chesky release, "The Feeling's Back." Most recently, he appears on Nancy Wilson's Grammy-winning CD, "Turned to Blue."

For the concert at CSU Kip will be joined by guitarist Dan Wilson and drummer Matt Perko.

As always, this concert is free and open to the public.

Sundown Jazz Series ****ARTIST CHANGE****
Organ Ism with Dave Thomas, Bill Ransom and Howie Smith

The Sundown Jazz Concert for November 16, originally scheduled to present the Glenn Holmes Trio, will now feature Organ Ism, with David Thomas, Bill Ransom and Howie Smith.

David Thomas, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, is a graduate of Case Western Reserve and Cleveland State University.  He toured with Dizzy Gillespie, recorded with jazz saxophonist Phil Woods, and has performed with most of Cleveland’s finest jazz musicians.  As an educator he has been an instructor at the Cleveland School of the Arts, Cuyahoga Community College, Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland State University.  He is currently on the faculty at John Adams High School.

Drummer and percussionist Bill Ransom is equally at home with classical, jazz, R&B and rock.  He has toured and recorded with leading artists including Patrice Rushen, Beth Hart, Marion Meadows, Cecil Bridgewater, Diane Reeves, Mary Wilson, and James Newton.  He spent much of the 90's on the road with contemporary saxophonist Najee and R&B crooner Gerald LeVert and was featured percussionist on Mr. LeVert's solo debut, "Private Line."  For the past several years he has directed "Jazz Meets Hip Hop" for the Tri-C JazzFest and is a consultant to both the Shaker Heights school system and Cleveland Music School Settlement.  His debut CD, Generations, was released nationwide in November 2005 on Bongo Time Records.

Saxophonist/composer Howie Smith has presented concerts and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Europe and Australia, and has worked with musicians, composers and ensembles as varied as Anthony Braxton, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gary Burton, John Cage, Dizzy Gillespie, Pauline Oliveros, Elvis Presley, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Tone Road Ramblers.  His recorded performances are equally diverse and his extensive catalogue of compositions includes works for conventional big bands and combos; for string, wind and percussion ensembles; for electronics; and for mixed media.  Recordings of his work may be heard on the Philips, Polydor, Albany, Optimism and Sea Breeze labels.

Organ Ism came into existence in early 2007 and its repertoire comes from original compositions by members of the group, and new takes on music of the past 50 years, most of which is not usually associated not with jazz musicians, but with people such as Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, Paul Simon, the Dixie Chicks, or Queen.

As always, this concert is free and open to the public.

Sundown Jazz Series
Peter Dominguez with Ki Allen, vocalist

The Sundown Jazz Concert for December 14 will present bassist Peter Dominguez and vocalist Ki Allen.

Peter Dominguez grew up in Milwaukee playing bass with his father, pianist and singer Frank DeMiles.  He earned baccalaureate and masters degrees at the University of Wisconsin, where he studied with Roger Ruggeri and Richard Davis.  In 1980 he was the first recipient of the Milton J. Hinton scholarship competition award and continued doctoral studies with Dr Lucas Drew at the University of Miami, Coral Gables.

Mr. Dominguez served as Professor of Double Bass and Jazz Studies at Michigan State University from 1984 to 1996, and was instrumental in developing their Jazz Studies Program.   He is currently Professor of Jazz Studies and Double Bass at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music.

For over thirty years Peter Dominguez has performed in a variety of musical styles and appeared in venues throughout the Americas and Europe.  He continues to perform, record, and tour with an impressive array of Classical, Jazz, and Latin artists.  His latest CD entitled ‘How About This” features master drummer Billy Hart and pianist Rick Germanson.

Singer Ki Allen has worked with practically every rhythm section in northeast Ohio, enjoying particularly long and fruitful associations with pianists Neal Creque and David Thomas, and guitarists Bob Fraser and Bob Ferrazza.  She constantly challenges herself and, as a result, her repertoire is ever expanding.  She has the uncanny ability to charm a young audience while, at the same time, managing to surprise jazz aficionados.

Through her performances in concerts, television, radio and nightclubs Ms. Allen has developed a broad array of devoted fans.  Whether her listeners are jazz or blues enthusiasts, Ms. Allen always finds a way to show them something new about the music they know and love.

Sundown Jazz Series
Ed Stephens Trio with
Dan Wenniger & Carmen Castaldi

Bassist Ed Stephens has been playing professionally for the past fourteen years.  During that time, because of his versatility, Stephens has performed jazz, classical, metal, rock, and R & B with the likes of Roberto Ocasio’s Latin Jazz Project, Abdulla,h The Byron Nemeth Group, Afrocubist, and various other blues and funk groups.  Although he is self-taught on electric bass, Stephens earned a degree as a performance major on double bass from Cleveland State University, studying with Harry Barnoff, and Ann Gilbert.  He has also studied privately with Scott Haigh.  His influences range from Charlie Haden, Lamar Gaines and Stanley Clarke to Ornette Coleman, Geddy Lee, Beethoven, and Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris.

Drummer Carmen Castaldi, like many other Cleveland jazz musicians of his generation, was strongly influence by guitarist Bill DeArango and saxophonist Tony “Big T” Lovano.   He was a student of legendary drum teacher Bob McKee, and also studied music at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, with Alan Dawson and Joe Hunt as his primary teachers.

Castaldi spent several years in the 1980s and 90s as the house drummer at the Four Queens Jazz Club in Las Vegas, backing notables Joe Henderson, Ernie Watts, Barney Kessel, Cedar Walton, and many others.  He returned to Cleveland in the mid-1990s, and since that time has toured the world as a regular sideman with Blue Note recording artist Joe Lovano.  In addition to leading his own group and backing others here in Cleveland, Castaldi also teaches privately.

Saxophonist Dan Wenniger has played with Aphrodisiatics, Fuzzhead, Lounge Kitty, Nitebridge and Pureplex.  His group, the Oblique Orchestra, was the regular house band at monthly improv session called Texture that took place at Duck Island.

Piano Masterclass
Pierre Réach (France)

The French pianist, Pierre Réach, studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, where he obtained diverse Premiers Prix in the classes of Yvonne Lefébure, Yvonne Loriod, Germaine Devèze, Jean Hubeau, Marcel Beaufils. Later he was accepted in the Improvement Cycle, where he studies with Paul Badura-Skoda, György Sebök, Géza Anda. Under the advice of Alexis Weissenberg he studied during several years with Maria Curcio in London. The teaching of this great pedagogue on master-pieces by Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert had deeply marked him.

Pierre Réach has received numerous awards in several international competitions : the First Prize in Olivier Messiaen International Piano Competition in Paris (he became then the assistant of Yvonne Loriod, for several years, in the CNSM of Paris), a Medal in the Artur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Israël, First Prize in the Pozzoli International Competition in Milano, and three Second Prizes : in Maria Canals and Jaén Competitions (Spain), and Casella (Italy).

Pierre Réach has appeared, in solo recitals and with orchestras, around the world: in Japan with NHK and Osaka Philharmonic, with KBS of Seoul, BBC and Hallé Orchestra of Manchester, Philharmonique and National of Radio-France, Capitole of Toulouse, OPPL (France), etc. He has performed in well established concert halls in Paris: Salle Gaveau, where he has played twice Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988); Salle Pleyel with Radio France Orchestras, in the Opéra Comique, where he has played Schubert's Winterreise with the English tenorMartyn Hill, in a mise en scène by Hans Peter Cloos; and in the Théâtre des Champs Elysées. In October 2002 he had a concert tour in China and since than goes back every year. He played in different festivals: Nohant, Saint Riquier, Lisztomania de Chateauroux, Prades, Menton, Strasbourg, Vaison la Romaine etc in France, Brescia-Bergamo, Fenice in Venezia, Pomerigi Musicali, festival Liszt de Grottammare in Italy where he received the Franz Liszt Prize, Saint Petersburg, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai.

Pierre Réach is known as one of the best interpreters of the Goldberg Variations (BWV 988). He has recorded them twice and received excellent reviews. His recordings shows clearly the originality of his repertoire, going from Mozart (sonatas, rondos) to Stravinsky (Petrouchka), Schubert (Musical MomentsKlavierstücke), Olivier Messiaen (Huit Préludes and Regards sur l'Enfant Jésus), Piano Concerto by Jean Cras, or Franz Liszt piano transcription of Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz (he is one of the very few pianists in the world who has played in a recital this dramatically virtuoso' masterpiece). On the other side, he has re-discovered the French Romantic composer Charles-Valentin Alkan. He has recorded, and plays the piano sonata, Les Quatre Ages de la Vie, frequently. Lately two new CD for Saphir Productions have come out, Felix Mendelssohn Trios with violonist Gerard Poulet and cellist Christoph Henkel, and Beethoven Hammerklavier sonata and Bagatelles. He is now preparing the integral of Beethoven sonatas.

Pierre Réach's teaching of piano and chamber music is an important part of his musical activities. Professor at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Paris, and at the Superior School of Music in Barcelona (ESMUC), Pierre Réach is constantly in demand for masterclasses in several countries: South Corea, Japan, Portugal, Israel, USA, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada etc. In January 2005 he was nominated Professor Honoris Causa of the Shanghai Conservatory. He is also invited to be a member of the jury by several international competitions (Piano Masters of Monte Carlo, Olivier Messiaen, Maria Canals , San Remo, Grands Amateurs, Zatin in Ukraine, Sonoda in Japan, etc).

Sundown Jazz Series
Lamar Gaines & David Thomas

The Sundown Jazz Concert for April 5 will feature bassist Lamar Gaines and pianist David Thomas.

Lamar Gaines began playing piano at cabarets and house-rent parties, and was soon playing with various jazz quintets in nightclubs throughout the city.  He learned how to play bass lines on the organ - an instrument he began playing in the 1950’s - and after awhile he decided to play the real thing.

He began to play the bass professionally in 1963, working with drummer Fats Heard, pianist George Peters, and various vocalists at the Old Tangiers in Akron.  Engagements playing shows at exclusive supper clubs followed, and he became a member of the house band at Cleveland’s Theatrical Grill.  Gaines appeared daily on live TV with the Mike Douglas Show, the One O’clock Show, the Don Webster Variety Show, and the Three On The Town Show, playing with traveling jazz greats who came through the area.  He also performed for many years at the Boarding House with his own band that featured countless Cleveland musicians and visiting artists.

Lamar Gaines has played with such notable pianists as Earl “Fatha” Hines, Errol Garner, Teddy Wilson, Dorothy Dunegan, Freddy Cole, Wynton Kelly, Monte Alexander, Willie Pickens, and Clevelander “Skeets” Ross.  He has also performed with many jazz legends, including Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Charlie Byrd, Sonny Stitt, James Moody, Jackie McLean, Rashaan Roland Kirk, Milt Jackson, Joe Williams, Sonny Fortune, and Carmen McRae.

Pianist David Thomas, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, is a graduate of Case Western Reserve and Cleveland State University, and has recently completed doctoral studies at Kent State University.

This will be the final concert in this year’s Sundown Jazz Series.  As always, the concert is free and open to the public.
