Auditions / Music Talent Scholarships & Graduate Assistantships - FAQs

Q: When and where will auditions be held?
A: Department of Music audition days are scheduled throughout the year. To ensure consideration for the Music Talent Scholarship, you should audition no later than March 15th prior to your anticipated enrollment at Cleveland State. Auditions are held in the Music & Communication Building.

Q: May I sumbit a tape rather than audition in person?
A: All applicants are strongly encouraged to audition on campus. Audio and videotaped auditions are accepted from international students, and in cases where travel to Cleveland presents an extreme hardship.

Q: How do I schedule an audition?
A: To schedule audition date and time, contact the department's enrollment office at 216-687-5039.

Q: How do I prepare for the audition?
A: For the audition, you should prepare two pieces in contrasting styles that demonstrate your musical and technical proficiency on your primary instrument. Voice students are expected to perform at least one song or aria in a language other than English. Percussion applicants should contact Howard Meeker, Director of Instrumental Music, to confirm audition repertoire.

Candidates who wish to pursue the Bachelor of Music degree with a concentration in Music Composition are required to demonstrate proficiency on their primary instrument as well. Q: Do I need to bring an accompanist?
A: No. (An accompanist will be provided for vocal auditions.)

Q: Do I have to be a music major to receive a music talent scholarship?
A: The Department of Music offers talent-based music scholarships to qualified in-coming freshmen, transfer students, and current students regardless of major, in return for participation in Department of Music ensembles. To ensure consideration, prospective students should audition no later than March 15th prior to your anticipated enrollment at Cleveland State. A: Yes.

Q: When will I find out if I have been awarded a music talent scholarship or graduate assistantship?
A: Awards for music talent scholarships and graduate asssistantships, stipends and tuition waivers are determined in March prior to enrollment at Cleveland State. Applicants are informed of the results in April.
