Advising Center guides students

By Danielle Young

In an effort to better assist students with career planning, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences launched
an Advising Center in fall 2007.

The center, which opened on Oct. 9 in the Chester Building, functions as the main office for CLASS.

“I believe the opening of the CLASS advising office is a major step forward in terms of fostering student success,” said Dr. Gregory M. Sadlek, dean of CLASS. “The changes will make for an overall better academic experience for our students.”

The CLASS Advising Center will assist students with course selection and registration, career information in relation to CLASS majors, the petition process, transcripts, transfer credit hours and the graduation process.

Students now can access an adviser in their particular study field. The advisers will bring a more focused knowledge and understanding of their majors to help guide them through their college experience.

“I believe placing advising within each college keeps students on task and on the right track to accomplishing their
goals,” said Anne Nelson, M.Ed., interim coordinator of advising and coordinator of Student Affairs at the center.

The center is looking to implement new programs in the near future. One of the programs is the CLASS Educational Plan, which will be used to guide students with their academic major and career goals. “We hope to make the Advising Center feel like home,” Nelson said.

“I would love to see our students stop by to hang out or do homework at the center in their spare time.”
