| Student director makes her big debut at CSU

Denise Astorino, a former actor and current Cleveland State University student with a directing scholarship is getting first-hand experience taking on the challenges and fortunes of being a first-time director and directing her fellow students.
“When you’re directing you’re looking from the outside in, you are able to
take what the actor gives you and help guide them in their performances,” Astorino said.
Astorino is the assistant director of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, one of the many plays that are being presented in the Theater Arts Building this year. Professor Holly Holsinger is the director.
Although Astorino said she felt equally creative at both acting and directing, she likes directing better because it involves being able to bring images and stories to life.
Still, she says there is a common ground.
Astorino said that she feels nervous whether acting or getting ready to direct, but they happen in different ways.
“As an actor your nerves go away as you feed off the energy of the crowd,” explained Astorino. “But as a director you have to just let go of your nerves and just let the play happen.” |
