School of Communication welcomes three new faculty
by Quinn Caffrey The School of Communication welcomed three new faces to the faculty this fall in Dr. Yung-I Liu, Dr. Jinhee Kim, and Dr. Anup Kumar. Dr. Yung-I Liu comes to Cleveland State University with a doctorate in communication and a master’s degree in journalism from The Ohio State University. Liu’s studies include strategic communication within political campaigns, the effects of campaign messages during presidential elections, and the effects of ethnic identities in advertising. “The goal of my research is to understand the communication processes that produce the effects, and also to generate practical knowledge to achieve effective communication,” Liu said. Liu’s goal for CSU is to enhance the reputation of the School of Communication and the Journalism and Promotional Communication program. Dr. Jinhee Kim earned a master’s degree from the University of Alabama and a doctorate from Pennsylvania State University. She began her teaching career as a visiting assistant professor at Kent State University before coming to CSU this fall. She is teaching two online classes: Mass Media and Society, and Communication Inquiry. Kim’s research, which includes the study of the stereotypical portrayal of Asians and Asian Americans on prime-time television, has been presented to the International Communication Association and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Kim’s work has also been published in the Encyclopedia of Children, Adolescents and the Media, Social Cognition and Communication, Psychology of Entertainment, and Sexuality and Culture. Dr. Anup Kumar began his career as a chemist. While working as a volunteer for environmental organizations, he began working in journalism. For years he worked as a reporter covering issues of the environment, culture and politics. He also worked for The Times of India before going back to graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in communication from the University of Northern Iowa. Currently, Kumar is working on a book based on his dissertation about the Uttarakhand Movement and the press. He is interested in researching the sociology of news as well as media law and ethics, which he taught during the fall semester. Kumar is also the current adviser for the Cleveland Stater.
