  1. Describe the major features of the Tokugawa system imposed on Japan after 1600. Why was each of these features instituted?

  2. Discuss the role of Neo-Confucianism in Tokugawa period Japan.

  3. What innovations emerged in the cultural style of the Tokugawa period? Where did many of them originate? What impact might they have had beyond the immediate environment which spawned them?

  4. Give examples of the process of indigenous modernization in Japan between 1600 and 1868.

  5. By the time of the arrival of Edward Sylvester Morse in Japan in 1877 what evidence of modernization inspired by westernization has appeared (as documented in the illustrated lecture)?

  6. Account for the collapse of the Tokugawa system on the basis of evidence derived from the illustrated lecture.

  7. Assess the impact of the visual material shown in the illustrated lecture on your understanding of Japan on the Eve of Westernization.
