Bedford
Historical Society (Bedford, OH)
Bedford Historical Society, located twenty minutes southeast of Cleveland,
offers a variety of projects suitable for qualified interns with an
interest in the history of the town of Bedford. The historical society
envisions interns serving for a semester as either an assistant curator,
library manager, archival researcher, videographer, or heritage tourism
marketing researcher.
Cleveland
City Council Archives (Cleveland, OH)
The Cleveland City Council Archives, located at 601 Lakeside Avenue,
seeks interns for a variety of projects, including: inventorying and
creating finding aids for collections of drawings, correspondence,
reports, and ordinances from much of the 20th century; indexing photos
in the Building and Housing Department collection; and updating an
existing index of street name changes since 1905. In addition to working
on one of these projects, each intern would assist in responding to
day-to-day public requests for information. An internship with the
City Council Archives would give the interested student invaluable
experience in exploring the career of Archivist.
Cleveland
Hungarian Heritage Museum (Cleveland, OH)
The Cleveland Hungarian Heritage Museum, located in the Galleria at
Erieview in downtown Cleveland, is pleased to announce an internship
that would involve conducting an oral history project focusing on
Hungarian immigrants and their descendants in the Greater Cleveland
area. Ability to speak Hungarian is especially desirable but not necessary.
The museum can also offer other projects for students interested in
learning more about the history of Hungarian immigrants.
Cleveland
Metroparks (Cleveland, OH & vicinity)
Metroparks needs interns to assist in researching various aspects
of the early history of the land that now encompasses the “Emerald
Necklace.” It also welcomes interns to receive training in tour
guiding for its Voyageur Canoe program (summers only), in which historical
interpreters recount the history of the region’s early settlers
while participants paddle the canoe on Hinckley Lake in Summit County.
Cleveland
Public Library (Cleveland, OH)
The Department of History at Cleveland Public Library, located on
Superior Avenue in downtown Cleveland, invites applicants for an internship
to create finding aids for various collections and improve information
on its web site and in its print brochures. Areas in which a student
might work include maps, local history, and genealogy.
Cuyahoga County Archives (Cleveland, OH) Located in two historic buildings in Ohio City on Cleveland’s Near West Side, the Cuyahoga County Archives welcomes interns to assist in processing collections pertaining to various aspects of Cuyahoga County history.
Dunham
Tavern Museum (Cleveland, OH)
Located on Cleveland’s East Side, Dunham Tavern is the oldest
surviving structure in the city. The museum, entirely volunteer-run,
seeks an intern to assist in researching the tavern’s history
and/or collections, organizing its records, providing information
to its docents, and coordinating its resource materials.
Euclid Landmark
Commission (Euclid, OH)
The Euclid Landmark Commission seeks a graduate student or advanced
undergraduate intern to build projects around one of several collections
of primary sources relating to the history of Euclid Township, which
at one time included not only the city of Euclid but extended as far
as Cleveland Heights and Beachwood. One collection, an inventory of
18th-20th century burials at Euclid Cemetery, offers the student possibilities
to construct a research project on the demographics and social history
of the community. The Commission, which is associated with the Euclid
Historical Society, is in the early planning stages for a bicentennial
celebration of Euclid Township in 2009. The student’s work would
not only offer a research opportunity but also the chance to be involved
in a project that will further the Commission’s programming
goals. The intern would be based at the Euclid Historical Museum but
would spend considerable time in various libraries and archives as
well.
Lakewood
Historical Society (Lakewood, OH)
The Lakewood Historical Society needs an intern to assist with research
to support new exhibits.
Ohio & Erie National Heritage Canalway (Cuyahoga Heights, OH)
Stan
Hywet Hall and Gardens (Akron, OH)
Stan Hywet, a 60,000-square-foot Tudor Revival estate located outside
Akron, was the home of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company co-founder
F. A. Seiberling before becoming a historic house museum. The museum
welcomes interns who are interested in gaining curatorial, tour guiding,
archival, and/or museum education experience. The intern would be
introduced to the many considerations that arise as a historic site
prepares to present its story to the public.

William G. Mather Museum (Cleveland, OH)
Periodically the Mather Museum seeks interns for docent training.
In addition to giving tours, the intern would learn various historical
interpretation techniques and would contribute to improving the process
of docent training and interpretive programming at the museum.
Tremont
West Development Corporation (Cleveland, OH)
Tremont West Development Corporation, a non-profit organization, continues
to research the history of the Tremont neighborhood in the interest
of historic preservation and community development. The TWDC needs
interns to expand its collection of oral histories, conduct research
to expand its historic property inventory, conduct independent research
on various aspects of Tremont, and/or participate in a series of public
meetings with Tremont residents. The intern would be based in TWDC’s
offices at 2190 Professor Street and would learn the day-to-day operations
of the organization but would also spend considerable time at various
local archives.
West
Creek Preservation Committee (Parma, OH)
The West Creek Preservation Committee operates the Henninger House,
the oldest house in Parma and a unit of the Ohio Canal Heritage Corridor.
The organization would like to conduct oral interviews of surviving
family from whom it purchased the Henninger property and also sort
through many personal letters and artifacts collected from the house
when purchased. The organization would also use the intern to help
in identifying restoration funding and writing grants to assist with
that. The intern would also work with Jonathan Sandvick Architects
to help complete a feasibility study and site assessment for a canal
transportation museum/visitor information center/ and trailhead on
the West Creek Greenway.
Western
Reserve Historical Society (Cleveland, OH)
WRHS, located in University Circle, is the largest history museum
in northern Ohio and one of the leading historical societies in the
United States. Possible internships include processing new collections,
including holdings in African American, Irish American, Jewish, automotive,
sports (baseball), and steel industry (LTV Steel) history; assisting
in the museum’s educational programming, including working with
educational outreach in area schools; and researching roles for Timesliders,
a first-person interpretation/historical theater initiative sponsored
by WRHS.
Western
Reserve Fire Museum at Cleveland, Inc. (Cleveland, OH)
The Fire Museum, a 501(3)(c) organization located in the Gateway District
of downtown Cleveland, needs an intern to assist in the creation of
a new firefighting history exhibit detailing the history of Cleveland
firefighting, fire education, and fire safety.
