Published "Daura and Gender
in the Creation of a Hausa National Epic", in the African languages and
culture (1997) and is completing "Telling Stories, Making History: Gender,
Language and Islamic Reform in a West African Culture", a book to be published
in the Social history in Africa series (Heinemann, ).
Her writings reflect her twenty years of work and experience in West Africa and her dedication to mastering the languages, history and culture of the Fulbe and Hausa people of Nigeria and Niger. She is a member of the African Studies Association and has frequently presented papers at the organization's national convention and at the annual meetings of the Social Science History Association. She has book reviews forthcoming in the Canadian Journal of African History. Recently, she has initiated research on the oral history of medical research in Hausaphone Niger and Nigeria and carried out field work in West Africa, the United Kingdom and France in the Summer and Fall of 1999. Her plans for African History include building courses on African women and cities in African history, strengthening the CSU Library holdings of African-related books and films, and enhancing the opportunities of students to learn about Africa across the curriculum. She plays a major role in the History department's African Diasporo Certificate Program.
