Creative Writing Contests: Approximately $3,000 in tuition scholarships will be awarded to winners of the Cleveland State University Student Writing Contest. Writers who hold scholarships or assistantships are encouraged to enter so that the CSU Poetry Center can honor their achievement.
Leonard Trawick Scholarship in Creative Writing: The Leonard Trawick Scholarship in Creative writing is an award given to a graduate student in creative writing on the basis of artistic and academic merit. Applications are evaluated in March, and the award winner in announced in April, at the department's annual Reception to recognize graduating seniors, masters candidates, and award winners. The scholarship is for $1,000.
Plain Dealer Writing Contest: The Plain Dealer Writing Contest is sponsored by the English department as a way of recognizing good expository writing as an aspect of student achievement. The contest is made possible by an endowment provided by the Cleveland Plain Dealer and gifts from English faculty members. Award entries are evaluated by a committee of two English professors and two Plain Dealer reporters. Entries are evaluated each year in March, and awards are given at the English department's annual Recognition Reception at the end of April.
English Alumni Scholarship: To enter, any declared English Major must submit an essay written for an English course during the 2001-2002 academic year. Essays may be any length and on any topic. The contest is sponsored by the English Alumni Association and offers a prize of a $300.00 tuition stipend for the 2002-2003 academic year.
