Specialties, Courses Taught:

A specialist in twentieth-century American fiction, Dr. Karem has an interest in multicultural studies that he developed during his undergraduate work at Rice University.

Educational Background:

He completed his undergraduate work at Rice University in Houston, Texas and his doctorate in English at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.

Awards, Grants, Publications:

Dr. Karem is a recipient of a Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities and has been awarded research funding from the Ford Foundation and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. He has presented papers at numerous conferences, including the annual conventions of the Modem Language Association and the International Society for the Study of Narrative. His study of Richard Wright's autobiography is scheduled for publication in American Literary History. Dr. Karem's current book project focuses on questions of authenticity in the representation of regional and ethnic cultures in the American South and Southwest.

Dr. Karem has a continuing interest in promoting diversity in his teaching, both in the material and in the students he teaches. In addition to teaching at his graduate institution, he has taught in adult education, public high schools, and programs for at-risk children. His contributions towards such extramural teaching earned him a Yale Community Service Fellowship in New Haven.

Personal:

As a native of Kentucky with family roots in Northern Ohio, Dr. Karem is especially pleased to return Midwest to join the community of Cleveland State University.
