Professional Experience & Community Activities
Michael Rand, Associate Professor, teaches DVD and emerging media, media and technology literacy, television and radio production, broadcast and new media writing, broadcast journalism, and documentaries. In his classes students learn visual storytelling, 'Writing for the Ear,' and in COM 470- DVD & Emerging Media- author their own DVDs. Professor Rand's students have also had an opportunity to work with him on creating a prototype DVD textbook and participate in the production of his documentaries.
He is an Emmy-winning television producer for the magazine show Evening Magazine. Two of his documentaries, 'Hear the Cry' and 'Defining Race' have aired on WVIZ-TV. Rand is also the author/producer/writer/director of the DVD and video programs 'Defining Race.' This DVD features documentaries concerning different views on race from around the world. He was the Executive Producer of Urban Issues, a monthly cable television program which reached more than 500,000 homes in greater Cleveland for 13 years.
He is currently working on a documentary researching racial incidents
that occurred during the Civil War.
Education
Professor Rand received a bachelors degree in dramatic arts in 1969 from Case Western Reserve University and his Masters degree in journalism from the University of Missouri.
