CSU Giving Day exceeds expectations

In an effort to fund student success, Cleveland State University held its fifth annual “Giving Day,” which began at midnight on Tuesday, Feb. 20 and ran for 24 hours.

The web-based philanthropic competition engaged alumni, parents, and the campus community in friendly rivalry to raise money between colleges and participating departments. People were able to donate directly on the event’s website by credit card.

Gifts went to a number of groups on campus, including student athletic teams, individual colleges and student life, according to the Giving Day website.

Donors gave the most money to the athletic department, according to the Giving Day website. They raised more than $186,900 from 1,957 individual donations.

The College of Education and Human Services came in second, with gifts totaling $17,739. The College of Graduate Studies had the lowest donor contributions of $175.

All Giving Day donors, and those participating in the social media challenges, were eligible for prizes and give aways. Prizes included tickets to Cleveland Cavaliers or Indians games, gift cards, and more.

The goal was to engage 1,500 donors and to raise $150,000 in just one day.

According to the website the campaign exceeded goals. By midnight it had practically doubled that, with gifts totaling $269,232 and donors exceeding 2,500.
