Appleby receives conference honor

By: Matt Poshedley

Viking point guard freshman Tyree Appleby received Horizon League player of the week recognition for the third time this season in his young college career.

With only a few weeks left to go in the season, Appleby is averaging more than 11 points a game on 42 percent shooting.

“It’s a great feeling and a great honor to be acknowledged like that,” Appleby said.
The 6-foot-1 point guard came to Cleveland State University from Jacksonville, Ark., where he was no stranger to basketball.

Appleby’s older brother, Raheem, produced more than 1,700 points as a guard at Louisiana Tech University. Before leaving for Cleveland State, Appleby said he will never forget that his big brother told him to be great and better than he tried to be.

“I love it out here,” Appleby said. “It’s a new experience for me and a bigger city than what I’m used to.”

In all sports, players have pre-game routines and preparation they go through, and for Appleby it’s no different.

“My teammates hype me up all the time in the locker room,” Appleby said. “When we get to listen to music, I always have my favorite group Migos in my ear.”

The Vikings are having a rough season  — with a 5-18 record, but Appleby’s confidence might be what this team needs.

“We’re picking it up and we’re going to impress a lot of people,” Appleby said. “In the tournament we’re going to pick it up, too. Don’t count us out.”
