CSU appoints Tulleners to fencing head coach

Andy Tulleners became the latest head coach for the Cleveland State University’s fencing program on Aug. 31. This is Tulleners’ second stint as head fencing coach with Cleveland State, having been the head coach from 2008-15, as well as an assistant coach from 2005-08. Before being re-hired, he was the associate head coach for the fencing program from 2015-17.

During his first stint as head coach, Tulleners received the Midwest Conference Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2014.

“I always knew I would come back,” Tulleners said. “It wasn’t a matter of if I would come back, but when, and it was nice to come back to the program I built.”

After he stepped back for a short time to refresh himself, Tulleners said he was able to refocus on the flow of practices. He also said the chemistry between him and his fencers this season is one of the best he’s seen.

“Now that I’m back as head coach, I was able to think about how I would create better experiences for the athletes,” Tulleners said. “I never stopped thinking about my relationship with the fencers, and it was nice to see that the chemistry I had shared with them as associate coach carried over in my second stint as head coach.”

Tulleners said his favorite moment from his first stint as fencing head coach was during situations where he would reach out to a student outside of the sport to help them out with school or give them advice. He also remembers a time when he was unable to go to an event because of a work commitment, where the men’s team took third and fourth in the event. He was eventually contacted about how well his fencers did, and he said he was proud of their achievements.

The Cleveland State fencing roster currently consists of 17 students, four freshman, five sophmores, four juniors and three seniors Tulleners and the men’s and women’s fencing program has their first event on Sep. 23 during the Cleveland State Fall Open at 9 a.m.
