Big wins for Lewis at Magnus Cup

By Brendan Samsa

On Sunday Nov 24, senior Viking swimmer Alex Lewis rounded out what was a valiant performance at the second annual Magnus Cup as he won six events, setting Cleveland State records in two of the events and Magnus Cup records in all six.

Lewis finished the final day of the three day event with three of his six first place finishes including two of his record breaking times in the 50 fly and the 50 freestyle. Also proving to be a key member in the 400 medley relay team as well as three other second place finishes, rounding out what was a big weekend for the Cleveland State senior.

Lewis’s accomplishments at the Magnus Cup netted him the first Horizon League player of the week award for Cleveland State this season. Winning the award so early in the season is no easy feat.

Coach Wally Morton was very impressed with Lewis’s tremendous performance in the Magnus Cup.

“He had a great attitude going into the meet, he was really having fun,” said Morton. “Breaking school records is not an easy thing to do this early in the season. Alex has really come a long way in his years here at Cleveland State and has gotten better every year.”

With the season still plenty young Lewis is staying focused and working hard to keep performing at a high level.

“We really trained hard leading up to the event and the team really stepped up as a whole,” said Lewis. “I get there pretty early for meets and go over the game plan with my coaches, just try to keep myself focused.”

As the season has progressed coach Morton’s young team has held their own as they look to be heading in to the break around .500. Looking ahead into the second half of the season the competition will pick up after winter break as the team gets closer to the Horizon League Tournament in March.

Following their meet this Tuesday the team headed down to Nashville Tennessee to compete in the USA Winter National Championship, a four day event ending on Dec 8.
