Superhero movies soar in summer

By Aziza Doleh

William Shakespeare said, “Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.”

That’s what any living breathing being can say about the success of the superhero films coming out this summer. Other much anticipated films this summer are “Star Trek into Darkness,” “The Wolverine” and “Lone Ranger.”

Man of steelThis summer theaters across the nation, will be featuring two superhero films: “Ironman 3” and “Man of Steel.” Both incredibly popular by comic book fans all over the world. The question is, which one are you going to see, and why?

“I like both I prefer DC , but doesn’t mean I don’t like Marvel. DC is grittier, more realistic than flashy and I’ve been dying for “Superman”. “Ironman 3” does look to be the best,” said Tyler Barker, a sophomore film and digital media major.

Cleveland State students have differences of opinion on who is going to rule the box office. Also most had different opinions on the direction of the films.

“I’m more excited about “Ironman 3,” but to me as a film “Superman” is going to do better. Because I think in terms of visual elements and the people you have working on the film will make “Superman” better,” said Lindsey Moffat, junior film student. “You got Zac Synder directing and Christopher Nolan producing, which can work with DC.”
One of 2012’s box office smash hits was Chrisopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” earning $249 million opening weekend worldwide.

IronmanMarvel Studios and Disney’s “Iron Man 3” have already exploded into the theatres overseas, opening to $195.3 million from 42 markets to beat last year’s blockbuster The Avengers, which debuted to $185.1 million internationally.

“I’m just going to see “Ironman 3” I’m not a big fan of the Christopher Nolan’s films and I’m probably the only who isn’t… Plus from the trailers “Ironman 3” looks like a better blockbuster to come this summer,” said John Powell, junior graphic design major.

“Iron Man 3” has been well reviewed thus far, is playing in roughly 80 percent of the foreign marketplace. “Man of Steel: Superman” has yet to be reviewed, but many fans have high hopes.

“Iron Man 3” hits theaters worldwide May 3 and “Man of Steel: Superman” will premier June 14.
