CSU picks architects for health building
By the start of the 2015 school year, Cleveland State University will have a new center for Health Innovations. The project is on time and will rise in the place of Viking Hall. The school expedited the demolition of Viking Hall last December. The work of clearing up the debris is on schedule.
The construction of Viking Hall will make room for a state-of the-art structure that will be the home of the North East Ohio Medical University known as NEOMED at Cleveland State, as well as other health related programs.
President Ronald Berkman recently announced that the university had chosen Pelli Clark Pelli as the architectural firm for this new Center for Health Innovation.
Giving the rationale behind the selection of the architect President Berkman in his monthly newsletter said, “Pelli Clark Pelli brings a wealth of experience to this high-profile project. Based in New Haven, Connecticut, the firm was founded in 1977 by Cesar Pelli, formerly the dean of Yale University’s School of Architecture. The World Financial Center in New York City, Malaysia’s Petronas Towers and the International Finance Centre in Hong Kong are just some of the stunning buildings that Pelli Clark Pelli has designed around the world. The firm also has an impressive history in Cleveland, where its credits include Key Tower and several Cleveland Clinic buildings.”
This new building will have four floors and approximately 100,000 square feet of work area. It will cost about $45 million.
The state-of-the-art design of the Center for Health Innovations has been in discussion between Berkman and Jay Gershen, president of the NEOMED program for a long time now.
NEOMED is in partnership with Cleveland State in running a medicine program that has a big focus on urban medicine. Currently, the program is being run from the Union Building.
The idea is to bring a new learning environment to Cleveland State’s campus for the various health departments. The College of Nursing students will come together with all the other Health Sciences under one roof.
The new building will also house the following departments: Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry and Physician Assistant Science.
Explaining the significance of this move by Cleveland State, Dr. Vida Lock, dean of the Department of Nursing, said that Cleveland has two world class hospitals — The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals — and there is a need for well-trained, diverse and skilled professionals.
In today’s day and age, professionals are required to work as a team and combine their respective skills in their fields rather than work on their own. This will be a big test for new students that are going through the program. It will make them more versatile in the real world once they graduate.
According to Dr. Lock this isn’t just a new building on campus, this is a building that will be structured as a more interactive environment with doctors, and medical students forming multi-disciplinary collaborations.
Health students will explore the different textbooks and training techniques, but along with that they will have the chance to experience different learning environments. The new building will include simulation stations for the new teaching curriculum, which will be breaking new ground in healthcare education. This will help in training with hands-on interactive experiences.
The plan is to move the current labs from the Chester Building to the new center of Health Innovation. It will include simulation labs with mannequins and real equipment that allow students to practice the skills they will need when working with actual patients.
The primary users of these labs are now Nursing students, but Cleveland State is planning to integrate teaching strategies to the education in other health disciplines.
“Providing excellent health care to patients in the community requires a team effort,” Lock said. “Inter-professional education is an important and innovative approach to better prepare future health professionals to work more effectively to meet the challenges and demands of the changing health care system.”
The university feels that the new Center for Health Innovation will put Cleveland State on the map even more than it is today.
