September 27, 2012

By Stephanie Metzger

The Cleveland State Vikings men’s basketball team has been scheduled to play in the2012 NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament in November.

The University of Michigan is hosting the tournament, which is for NCAA Div-1 schools, at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor. Cleveland State will start their tournament run on Monday, Nov. 11 as they face the Bowling Green Falcons. The winner of that game will advance to the next round, which will feature the winner of the Michigan versus Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis match-up.

The first round will take place from Nov. 12-13 and the second round will be held from Nov. 19-20.

Winning teams will advance to the semi-finals, which will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York on Nov. 21. The losing teams will be shifted to a consolation bracket.

The championship games are scheduled for Nov. 23. The games will broadcast on ESPN’s family of networks and on WatchESPN.

Michigan is seeded first in the tournament, followed by Virginia with the second seed and Kansas State with the third.

The announcement was made by C.M. Newton, the chair of the NIT committee.
Last year’s tournament winner was Kentucky, who was the 2012 NCAA national champion after finishing the season with a 38-2 record.

Cleveland State ended the 2011-12 season with a 22-11 record when they fell to Stanford in the first round of the NIT National Tournament in March.

The Vikings tip off the regular season on Nov. 6 at home against Malone University. They start Horizon League play on Jan. 4 at Valparaiso.
