Golf teams in to swing of things

Men’s and Women’s teams look to wrap up fall season on high note

By Jarod Miller

Golf fans understand emotional ups and downs are experienced throughout the course of 18 holes as much as a greenside bunker shot that leads to a one-putt for par.
With that in mind, the men’s and women’s Viking golf teams’ fall season has been highlighted with success and setbacks. But each team hopes to end on a positive note and create some momentum into the spring season, according to Head Coach Steve Weir.
“We get to use the fall season to set up the spring season,” Weir said.

Women’s team
The women’s team began, finishing in a tie for fourth out of nine teams in the Youngstown State Invitational at Salem Hills Golf Course on Sept. 9-10.
Katie Broere shot a final round low 75 ending up in an individual tie for second and Mallory Wyderka shot 79-80 finishing with 159 and a tie for eighth place.
At YSU, the team set school-records for lowest tournament score at 629, and individual round score of 320.
The women had some struggles since then. The team wound up finishing ninth out of 13 teams at the Western Illinois Invitational on Sept. 16-17. Broere shot another second round 75 on her way to a tie for ninth place and Laren Beese shot her two lowest rounds of the year posting an 81-82—163.
The team took a step backward at Detroit, finishing fifth out of six teams in the Detroit Invitational at Western Golf and Country Club on Oct. 8-9. Beese was the team’s top finisher in a tie for 23rd place with a total round score of 175.
“We never got anything going and the course really didn’t suit our style of play,” Weir said. “But that’s not an excuse for how we played.”
The women closed out the fall season at the IPFW Invitational on Oct. 15-16 at Deer Track Golf Course, a place where the team shot a then school-record of 322 in the second round on Oct. 17, 2005. CSU did not play in the IPFW Invitational last year. Results of their match were not available as of press time.

Men’s team
The men’s team started out the year finishing fourth out of 15 teams at the John Piper Invitational. Jake Scott led the Vikings with a total three-round score of 217, good enough for a ninth place individual finish.
But at the Kansas Invitational the following weekend the team wound up finishing 10th out of 16 teams. Kent Monas shot a final round 70 en route to a three-round total of 218, tying for the third place.
Since then, the men have rebounded to finish third out of 11 at the CSU Invitational and fourth out of nine on Oct. 8-9 at the IPFW Fall Classic in Fort Wayne, Ind., at Deer Track Golf Course.
At the classic, Shane Swanson, Kyle Cobb and Doug Barber each had low scores of 68 in the second round while Monas and Scott shot low first round scores of 68 and 67 respectively. The team combined for their two lowest rounds of the season in the first and second, both school records, scoring consecutive totals of 277.
The men wrapped up their fall season on Oct. 15-16 at the Belmont Fall Shootout at Old Natchez Country Club in Brentwood, Tenn. Results were not available as of press time.
While the desired results weren’t always achieved, the experience provided an opportunity for growth in the players’ games.
They have the physical talent, but they need to improve their mental aspect of the game, according to Weir.
“A lot of young players got some experience and learned to manage themselves better on the golf course,” coach Weir said. “Scores improved over last year.”
