Students donate blood

By Melanie Murphy

The American Red Cross collected 60 pints of blood during its blood drive on campus on Sept. 25 and 26.
“We encourage first time donors,” said Paul Vecchione, team supervisor at the American Red Cross. “We’ll hold their hand and walk them through the process step-by-step.”
Each donor gave one pint of blood, or in other terms, 1/8 of a gallon.
The 60 pints of blood would save about 180 lives, according to the American Red Cross.
Why do people give blood?
David Stewart, senior mechanical engineering major who donated blood, said he does it to help people.
“It’s quick and doesn’t take a lot of time,” said Elizabeth Hecker, a graphic design major. “It is an easy way for me to give back to the community.”
For every person who donates one pint of blood, three lives are saved.
After donating, each person got to enjoy cookies, juice, pop and other snacks.
For those students who could not donate, but would like to donate in the future, it is recommended to eat a meal before donating.
