37th annual student art
show
judges select award winners
By Jayah Watters
Justin Reynolds, a sophomore majoring in fine
art, was surprised when he found out that his artwork was selected for
display in the 37th Annual Student Art Show.
"I was shocked when I found out," Reynolds said. "I submitted
(artwork) last year as well and my work was also selected."
This year, Reynolds submitted a piece titled "Trike," a customary
tricycle that incorporates a modern feel.
"It weighs about 60 pounds and I think it's awkward at best,"
the artist explained. "There were a lot of pieces that were selected
that I thought wouldn't make it."
The juried exhibition consisted of 52 pieces crafted by 39 CSU students.
Ann Albano, executive director at Sculpture Center in Cleveland, and
Dan Tranberg, renowned artist, art critic and writer were jurors.
"In selecting the work for this year's show, we looked for pieces
in which idea and craft came together to form coherent visual statements
with a compelling formal structure, emotionally genuine impact, or intellectually
challenging themes," they explained.
Douglas Max Utter, a Cleveland native and artist critic for the Free
Times, was another judge.
Utter selected the Best of Show winner, which was awarded to Erin Wozniak
for her painting titled "Self Portrait in Red." The award
for excellence was given to Wozniak for her piece titled "Claw."
James Doyle's sculpture titled "Homage to Chihuly" was also
selected for an award of excellence. The piece hung from the ceiling
and was constructed with hot glue and paint.
The student artwork will be on display in the CSU Art Gallery until
May 3.
