Urban schedules ArcGIS workshop

An ArcGIS 9 software workshop will be held at the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs from Aug. 24 through Aug. 26. ArcGIS 9 is geographic information systems (GIS) software used for computer mapping, and viewing and analyzing data from a geographic perspective. This software allows urban planners an opportunity to model and map a city, and to test various hypotheses and visual outcomes. The workshop hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the fee is $108 for CSU faculty and students and $700 for others. To register, visit the College of Urban Affairs Web site or call (216)-687-2209. Registration ends Aug. 12 and GIS experience is not necessary. The Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs is located at 1717 Euclid Ave. (Jeri Jewett)

Interested in helping with production?

The theater department’s first production this fall is the play “How I learned to Drive,” by Paula Vogel. Cleveland State students will perform the play at the CSU Main Stage Theatre on select dates in late September and early October. The play will be directed by the theater department’s assistant professor, Margaret Ford-Taylor. “How I Learned to Drive” opened in New York in 1997 and won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in a year later. Despite the play’s title, the themes of the prize-winning dialogue are very mature. A woman’s recollection of a childhood affected by sexual abuse leads to family dysfunction and the challenge of coming to grips with her own identity. CSU students are always welcome to help with production. Those interested in set, audio, lighting, acting, or directing should call the dramatic arts department at 216-687-2113. (Erika Feliciano)

3rd annual Kids in Flight event Saturday

Kids in Flight, Inc., founded by Cleveland State senior Maria Weybrecht, will host its third annual charity event this Saturday, July 23, at Lost Nation Airport in Willoughby. Kids in Flight offers the opportunity for seriously ill children and their families to take free flights with experienced pilots. These private tours of the Cleveland skyline are provided through donations by local businesses and private individuals. The T&G Flying Club, Inc. provides the aircraft while its pilots donate their time. Weybrecht, 22, was diagnosed with cancer in 2002, just two months after earning her private pilot’s license. She began Kids in Flight as a way to share her love of flying and to honor those who help her continue to fight the disease. Besides the flights, the event will feature a display of historical aircraft, aviation-related games and free lunch. A professional photographer will also be on hand. Kids in Flight begins at 10 a.m. and will end when each family has had a chance to fly. For more information, e-mail Kidsinflight@hotmail.com.
