XXC off and running
By Michael Heben
Cleveland State Univ-ersity Women’s Cross Country coach, Shawna Evans has three simple goals for this season: stay healthy, improve times and improve attitudes.
Evans herself was a standout runner for Cleveland State from 1996-98. She was named Runner of the Year by the Athletic Alumni Association. Now Evans is focusing on guiding her Cleveland State team to the top of the Horizon League.
The Vikings have a solid roster of 12, but have only two seniors, which means as they gain more experience they can only get better.
Juniors Rachel Smith and Shariah Pratt, as well as sophomores Lyndsay Bukovec, Julene Nickoloff and Vanessa Anna have consistently turned out the best times so far this season.
Bukovec has turned out the fastest times in two of the Viking’s three meets so far this season, while Smith led the team in the other.
Evans said the team practices daily running up to eight miles, and also use swim workouts to improve strength and conditioning.
