Black studies program pays tribute
Cleveland State University is holding Academic Survival Skills Workshops from October through the beginning of December. The workshops will include: “Success in the Classroom – Active Listening and Taking Good Notes,” Oct. 1 and Oct. 31; “Reading Comprehension and Selecting Main Ideas,” Oct. 8 and Nov. 6; “Assess Your Study Skills and Learning Style,” Oct. 9; “Information Processing and Critical Thinking – Writing Papers,” Oct. 15 and Nov. 13; “Motivation,” Oct. 16; “Memory and Concentration,” Oct. 22 and Nov. 20; “Time Management and Goal Setting – Deadlines and Decisions,” Oct. 23; “Test Taking and Test Taking Skills,” Oct. 29 and Nov. 27; and “Stress Management,” Nov. 5 and Dec. 4. Times for the Tuesday workshops will be noon to 1 p.m. in UC 254B. Times for the Wednesday workshops will be 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in UC 361. These workshops are sponsored by the CSU Counseling Center Professionals. Black studies program pays tribute The CSU Black Studies Program is presenting “For My People: A Tribute to Poet and Black Studies Scholar Margaret Walker.” The guest speaker will be Dr. RegenniaWilliams, professor at Cleveland State University, department of history. The event will take place Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. in the African American Cultural Center, UC 103 Dr. Richard Rakos, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has set up a panel discussion for faculty in an effort to educate students on how to avoid plagiarism, strategies to prevent it, and Web-based strategies to detect plagiarism and the downloading of on-line papers. The panel will also discuss the benefits of a collective departmental response to academic misconduct, the procedures and penalties at CSU, and the resources available to help uphold academic integrity. The panel is scheduled to meet Oct. 17 CSU welcomes basketball legend Here’s an additional opportunity to join CSU head basketball coach Rollie Massimino in welcoming the legendary Bob Knight to Cleveland on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Knight is the coach at Texas Tech and will be at the CSU Convocation Center to give a presentation covering stories of both basketball and life. General admission tickets for Knight’s presentation are now available for $35 from the CSU Convocation Center box office and through all Ticketmaster outlets at (216) 241-5555. Doors will open at 8 p.m. with Knight’s presentation set to begin at 8:30 p.m. In addition to other special guests, NBA television analyst and former NBA coach Mike Fratello will be the emcee for the event. Three upcoming events that the Career Services Center offers include, a resume writing workshop on Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. in the James J. Nance College of Business Administration, room 116 and a networking workshop on Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. Rhodes Tower West, room 318. An interviewing workshop is also scheduled. WCSB is accepting cassettes no more than 10 minutes in length to be played on-air starting Wednesday, Oct. 2. All entries should be sent to WCSB Cassettefest, 2121 Euclid Ave. Rhodes Tower 956, Cleveland, OH 44115. The deadline to submit tapes is Friday, Oct. 4.
