CSU hosts 10 Croatian professors
CSU hosts 10 Croatian professors A Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation was signed last Wednesday between Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs and the University of Rijeka in Croatia. The memorandum, signed by CSU president Michael Schwartz and Professor Daniel Rukanvina, Ph.D., rector of the University of Rijeka, seals a collaborative effort between the two universities. Collaboration began this Monday, when 10 professors from three universities in Croatia came to CSU for a two-week program. The program, being held at Levin College’s Unger Croatia Center for Local Government Leadership, will help the professors develop curriculum to start public administration programs at their home universities.
Scholarship named for Fenn alum Danferd C. Avis, Fenn College alumnus and three-year captain of the basketball team, was honored last week with an endowment scholarship in his name. The Danferd C. Davis Endowed Basketball Scholarship is in preliminary phases. The goal is to raise $250,000 for the endowment. Once the goal has been reached, recipients will then be nominated. Award of the scholarship will be based on basketball ability, leadership, scholarship, and character. A 24-member committee, consisting of members of the CSU staff, family, and friends, has already been established to award the scholarships.
A retirement party will be held for Dr. Ferris F. Anthony, former dean of continuing education, at the Cole Center Auditorium, located at 3100 Chester Ave. It will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25. A retirement party was also held for John Konstantinos, former athletic director, yesterday at the Convocation Center to celebrate 12 years of service.
The CSU Board of Trustees will meet at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at the board room located on the fourth floor of the Convocation Center.
In memory of their son Ram Shivashankar, who unexpectedly passed away shortly before he would have graduated in 2001, Ram’s parents have for a second year awarded two scholarships in the memory of their son. The recipients, both undergraduate students, are Jane Frances Sandlin of North Olmstead and Alexander Smith of Lyndurst, according to CSU’s department of marketing and public affairs. Jane Frances Sandlin, who will receive $1,000, is an English major, while Alexander Smith, who will receive $500, is a communications major. Ram Shivashankar passed away on Jan. 7, 2001 after fighting severe viral pneumonia. Throughout his life, the CSU department reported, Shivashankar “faced a myriad of challenges due to incurable mitochondrial disease.” Ram’s sister, Seetha Aiyar, spoke very highly of him: “He was a dedicated student and role model for younger children,” she said. “Ram was truly an inspiration to all, a remarkable student with a promising future. We hope he knows how much he touched each and every one of us.”
