Santia Cole, 5, and Dr. Jean Murell Capers, 90, share a moment together during the 90th Birthday Tribute and Reception for Capers. Cleveland State University hosted the reception on Friday, Jan. 31 to celebrate Black History Month. Capers earned a degree from the Cleveland Law School (now Cleveland-Marshall College of Law) in 1945. In 1946, Capers became the first African-American woman to serve as Assistant Police Prosecuter and as a member of Cleveland’s City Council. Capers helped with the 1967 election campaign of Carl B. Stokes and she served as a Cleveland Municipal Court Judge from 1977 to 1980.
