New education program available

Cleveland State University’s College of Education is implementing a new program, effective this summer, which offers scholarships to students majoring in mathematics or science.

Scholarships are available covering the tuition fees for 38 credit hours of professional education coursework needed for a State of Ohio Teaching License in secondary education. To be eligible, students must be admitted into the education program and be willing to teach in one of the Cleveland-area urban districts for three years.

Additionally, 50 scholarships are available covering tuition fees for one to two credits of service learning volunteer work in urban school systems. The student must work in math or science classes, or labs. To be eligible, a student must be a CSU math or science major and volunteer at least two hours a week.

Students with majors in biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics or physics and a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 may apply for a scholarship.

Applications are being accepted for fall until Aug. 1. The deadline for summer scholarships was June 1.

Author to speak at lunch

New York Times best-selling author and Cleveland native Antoine Fisher will speak at the Summer 2002 Teacher Institute’s “Learning through the Arts” opening luncheon Friday, June 21 at noon in Cleveland State University’s Convocation Center.

Mayor Jane Campbell and Cleveland School’s CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennet will also speak.

The luncheon, sponsored by the Arts Education Partnership, will focus on the value of arts education and draw attention to the work of the Teacher Institute—a summer program designed to present new ways to incorporate the arts in the classroom.

Fisher will speak of his childhood experiences and the importance of the arts to his current success.

His memoir, “Finding Fish,” has been developed into a movie which is soon to be in theaters. Starring Denzel Washington, a number of scenes from the movie were shot on location in Cleveland.

Tickets for the luncheon are available at the door for $20. Teachers registered for Summer Institute courses may attend for free, but space is limited.
