Chamber symphony plans concert

The Cleveland Chamber Symphony will perform a concert at Cleveland State on Nov. 5.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Drinko Recital Hall in the Music and Communication Building. The concert will have a jazz theme, including pieces by Charlie Parker, Ed Miller and Ned Norem.

"Three of the four are Cleveland premieres," said Prof. Christine Dorey, referring to the pieces being performed at the concert.

Dorey also said that the Cleveland Chamber Symphony premieres new music often, and is one of the few groups to specialize in performing new music.

Annual Smoke Out set for November

In recognition of the Great American Smoke Out, the Cleveland State University Department of Health Services will provide cigarette smokers opportunities on Nov. 12 and 15 to quit smoking for at least a day.

The Great American Smoke Out promote a smoke-free campus and better health.

OIFF offers free workshop at CSU

A cinematography and lighting techniques workshop will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3 at CSU’s Communication Department in room G31. The workshop is free and open to the public.

Robert Banks, Naomi Hollander and John Turk, three local filmmakers, will share the stage.

It is the kick-off event for the 2001 Ohio Independent Film Festival and Market scheduled for Nov. 6 through 11 at Cleveland Public Theatre.

Colloquium scheduled for Nov. 9.

The Cleveland State University Social Work Department is sponsoring a Community Based Field Project Colloquium to be held Nov. 9.

Students, staff and faculty will work with individuals, social service agencies and the community. The program is linked to seven local agencies.

The students involved are from Cleveland State, the University of Akron and Case Western Reserve University. The program now has 24 students who have gone through an interview process that also included fieldwork, applications, interviewing with an agency board and writing an essay.

Cultural Crossings series begins

The Cultural Crossings series, created by the Humanities Consortium of Cleveland State begins this fall with two lectures Nov. 8, and Dec. 6.

This year’s theme “The Humanities in the City, A Public Dialogue” will feature dialogue on the the central role of the humanities in shaping urban culture.

Dr. James Grossman, historian and vice president for research and education at the Newberry Library in Chicago, Ill., will speak on the topic “Streets, Libraries and Laboratories: Urban Studies and the Humanist Dilemma” on Nov. 8, at 5 p.m. in Waetjen Auditorium.

Edward Dimendberg, assistant professor of architecture, film and video studies, and German studies from the University of Michigan, will speak on the topic “Film Noir, the Metropolis and the Humanities” on Dec. 6, at 5 p.m. also in Waetjen Auditorium.

Two more lectures are scheduled for the spring.
