Sci-fi novelist visits First College
Sci-fi novelist visits First College First College will have science fiction novelist Octavia Butler as a guest speaker this coming spring. Five of Butler’s novels are in the Patternmaster series; three are in the Xenogenesis series, and there is the single and singular novel, “Kindred.” Butler’s shorter fiction “Speech Sounds” won the 1984 Hugo award for best short story. Butler’s other book, “Bloodchild,” also won the Hugo award in 1985 as well as the Nebula and Locus awards for best novelette. Another book of Butler’s “The Evening and the Morning Night” was nominated for a 1988 Hugo award for best novelette. The books are said to be stories of power- adjustment to power, struggle for power, and corruption by power. Parking services has just issued spring semester parking permit applications and process. Effective Jan. 2, 2002 the price of a semester parking pass has been raised to $104 and the hang tag to $3. The price for faculty and staff permits has also gone up. The price is considered to be cost effective for the semester pass as long as a student is on campus two or more days a week. All lots except Lot Z, can be parked in during all events if you are the holder of a semester parking permit. However if you are only the holder of a hang tag permit, you are not permitted to park in any core lots until after 2 p.m. This information can also be found on www.csuohio.edu/parking or in Parking Services, which is located in the annex of the Chester building. Cleveland State University is hosting a holiday reception on Dec. 6 for alumni. Sponsored by alumni affairs, this event will be held in Mather Mansion. The reception is going to feature a tour of the mansion including a showing of various art exhibits. Cocktails and appetizers will be served along with light music entertainment. Anyone wanting to make a speech at this occasion is more than welcome. The reception begins at 5 p.m. and attire is business casual. For more information, contact alumni affairs at (216) 687-2078. Fun planned for night students The Department of Student Life is sponsoring the Evening Student Holiday Reception, on Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the UC Cage. The reception is open to all Cleveland State University students. CSU students can attend the reception free of charge with the verification of a CSU ID. The Evening Student Holiday Reception will feature music provided by the band, “Up in the Air.” The band is described as singing, “A Capella with No Limits.” The music will be performed in the styles of jazz, world pop, and R&B. The Department of Student Life sponsors the reception with donations from Chipotle. The Cleveland Chamber Symphony will present a free concert, “Music by Young and Emerging Composers,” Thursday, Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. in Drinko Recital Hall in the Music and Communication Building, 2001 Euclid Ave. |
