Friends of the Library discuss popular books

The Friends of the Library and its members will meet March 29 at 3 p.m. to discuss the book “March” in Rhodes Tower 503. The discussion will be co-led by Dr. Lehfeldt, Ph.D., from the Mandel Honors College and Richard Fox from ideastream.

Friends of the Library was established in the late 1980’s and has held book discussions since it began. It provides special programs that focus on books, authors and supports the donations of books to needy libraries nationwide.

The group held one book discussion Feb. 15 about “The Boys in the Boat,” which is about the eight-oar 1936 Olympic men’s rowing team. Nine working American boys who transformed the sport and caught the attention of millions of Americans.

During the Friends’ May or June lunch meeting, where Friends decide what books as well as what local author they would like to come in and speak during the next school year.

Every year during National Library Week in the spring, Friends of the Library invites a local author to talk about his or her book.

This spring Sam Thomas will be coming to speak on his book “The Midwife’s Tale” on April 12 at 3 p.m.

Friends of the Library encourages its members and students to participate by reading the selections and discussing them with others at the event.

The book discussions usually last anywhere from one hour to one and ahlf hours. Also, Friends of the Library provide refreshments for all its events.
