International Education Day celebrates global cultures

Celebrated all over the country, International Education Day honors students and cultures from all over the globe.

Cleveland State University's Center for International Services and Programs hosted many performances and food choices in the Student Center atrium on Nov.15 as part of its celebration.

This year the university’s recognition of the event had more structure and greater access to students and staff on campus than it has had in the past.

About 15 organizations, including the English Department and Education Abroad, came together to host numerous tables representing different countries, with students representing each of the different cultures with food and performance.

Types of performances featured include Chinese Peking Opera, which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance, and acrobatics, Saudi Arabian guitar performances, Lebanese Dabka, which combines circle dance and line dancing that is widely performed at weddings and other joyous occasions and many more.

"It's just about the culture, it's not about the current political situation,” said Rita Kizys, graduate assistant for the Center for International Services and Programs and chief organizer of the event. "Not that the politics don't matter, but for one day we just want people to leave them aside. All of us coming together should be just about the fun."
