CyberOhio selects CSU law professors

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine appointed Cleveland State University’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law professors, Brian Ray and Candice Hoke to the Advisory Board of CyberOhio.

CyberOhio is a new initiative that will help business by creating a legal, technical, and collaborative cybersecurity environment.

The goal of CyberOhio is to bring together industries to talk about issues dealing with cyber security.Cleveland-Marshall is the only Ohio law school on the CyberOhio Board.

Brian Ray, law professor and co-director of the center for cyber security and privacy protection, has an extensive background dealing with cyber security, electronic discovery and data security. Ray and Hoke shared their expertise several years ago to create a center in the law school, which is now known as Cleveland-Marshall’s Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection.

“Professor Hoke and I, several years ago began thinking about joining forces, taking our shared expertise and creating a center that would be based at the law school but would be interdisciplinary,” Ray said.
The center in the law school created the connection between DeWine, Ray and Hoke.

"We launched the center in April, and one of the groups that we brought in was the Attorney General’s Office, and we had a representative from the office talking about their role after a data breach, and that led to the connection,” Ray said.

Ray said it is an honor to be chosen for the CyberOhio board, and it shows how the center has emerged, although they launched only last spring.

“It is an honor,” Ray said. “Professor Hoke and I are thrilled and also we are especially thrilled because it shows how quickly we been able to emerge since last spring.”

Ray says that being the only Ohio law school on the board gives CSU recognition.

“It’s a real recognition,” he said. “Cleveland State is emerging and is already a leader in this field both on the legal side and technical side.
